Museo Correr

Teodoro Correr’s collection constitutes the heart of the museum entitled to his name. The history of the venetian Republic is explained through maps, nautical instruments, coins, armours and many objects related to the figure of the Doge. Some rooms are dedicated to the history of the city in the XIXth century. The art gallery shows the cronological evolution of the art of painting in Venice, among the most famous works we find Vittore Carpaccio’s Portrait of a young man with a red cap and Two venetian ladies.

Ca' d'Oro

One of the most beautiful examples of venetian-gothic architecture on the Canal Grande houses the collection of baron Franchetti, who bought the palace at the beginning of XIXth century in a condition of bad disrepair, finely restored it and then bequethed it, with all its content, to the Italian state. In the inner courtyard, paved with a mosaic, there’s a beautiful XVth century well-head, while the masterpiece of the art gallery is Andrea Mantegna’s St.Sebastian. The collection is composed of paintings by venetian and flemish masters, statues, tapestries and bronze reliefs.

Fondazione Querini Stampalia

The members of the Querini family, great collectors and lovers of art, enriched their palace with a fine collection of paintings, with some outstanding pieces by Giovanni Bellini and Giambattista Tiepolo. The daily life of XVIIIth century is represented in a detailed and somewhat ironic way in the paintings of Pietro and Alessandro Longhi. The foundation also own a library with more than 200.000 books.

Grimani Palace

Sumptuos XVIth century mansion that belonged to one of the most rich and powerful venetian families, it has been finely restored and recently reopened to the public. Unusual for its architectonical structure and painted decoration, expression of the will of the highly cultured Grimanis, it’s lavishly decorated with stuccoes and precious marbles. It has also been the first seat of the collection, formerly owned by Giovanni Grimani, that today constitutes the heart of the Archeological Museum housed in the rooms into the Procuratie Nuove in San Marco that, among other precious exhibits, numbers some precious greek originals from V-VIth century B.C.

Museo Fortuny

The spanish artist Don Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo lived and worked in the imposing Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei and at his death both the house and its content were bequethed by his wife to the city of Venice. The large rooms of the late gothic building are a perfect set for the precious fabrics woven with gold and silver, for the paintings, pleated dresses and photos by Fortuny.

Pinault Collections

The collections of the french tycoon François Pinault are displayed in the XVIIIth century Palazzo Grassi on the Canal Grande and in the brand new Museum of Punta della Dogana, housed in the ancient custom house of the Republic, facing St.Mark’s basin. The works of art exhibited represent the most recent tendencies of contemporary art, true expressions of our times.

Historical Naval Museum

It records the naval power of the Serenissima, for centuries undisputed queen of the seas. The museum was born from an idea of the austrian dominators who decided to assembly what remained of the venetian fleet after the fall of the Republic and includes models of ancient vessels, maps, weapons, friezes from the galleys and a model of the Bucintoro, the doge’s ceremonial barge.

Palazzo Mocenigo

The last member of the Mocenigo family, that gave to the venetian Republic no less than seven doges, bequethed the palace to the city council. In addition to a collection of XVIII century dresses, five rooms dedicated to the production of perfume in Venice enrich the itinerary.

Carlo Goldoni’s House & Museum

In his memories written at the age of eighty, the great playwriter, father of the modern theatre, remembers Ca’ Centani as “the big and beautiful house” where he was born. The elegant gothic mansion built in XVth century, that still shows the typical open stairway and a magnificent well-head in the courtyard, houses an interesting museum and cultural centre specialized in theatrical studies.
